                                                        “Empower Parents, Enable Breastfeeding”

The Departments of Community Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics of K. V. G. Medical College & Hospital along with K. V. G. College of Nursing & Nursing Sciences, organized an awareness programme to commemorate ‘World Breastfeeding Week’ on 7th August 2019. Health education videos were played in the hospital OPD lobby from 1st of August.

The programme commenced with an invocation song by Dr. Aishwarya S and lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries. Dr. Krithi Bhat was the Master of ceremony. This was followed by the Welcome speech which was delivered by Dr.Geetha Doppa, Professor & HOD, OBG. The eminent dignitaries were Dr. K.V. Chidananda, Medical Director, KVGMCH, Smt. Shobha Chidananda, Treasurer, AOLE, Dr.Satyavathi K, Dean, KVGMCH, Dr.Sheela G Nayak, Professor Emeritus, Dr. A. G. Kulakarni Prof. and HOD Community Medicine KVGMCH, Dr.Subramanya, THO, and Dr.Bhanumathi, CMO, CHC, Sullia, Mr. Jagdish, Administrator, Mr. Dhananjay, CFO, KVGMCH.

The nursing students presented a skit depicting the myths associated with breastfeeding, highlighted the importance of good nutrition for the mother during antenatal as well as lactating period. This was followed by a series of health education talks.

The first talk was by Dr.Bhavya, Assoc. Prof, OBG who emphasized on good antenatal and postnatal care of the mother in terms of nutrition, sleep, relaxed mind, and knowledge regarding proper technique as a prerequisite for breastfeeding. Dr.Savitha Sathyaprasad, Professor & HOD, Paediatric dentistry, spoke about the ill effects of bottle feeding on the dentition of the child. She also highlighted the importance of integration of all departments directly or indirectly for promoting breastfeeding. Dr.Niveditha Reddy from Paediatrics spoke about uses of breast milk for children. Dr.Narayana Holla, Professor, Dept. of Community Medicine, said that the preparation for breastfeeding should start as soon as pregnancy is detected and continued at every opportunity for empowering the parents to adopt good practices.

The presidential address was delivered by Dr. K. V. Chidananda. He enumerated as to how in today’s world families and societies can contribute towards sustaining breastfeeding as this gives a strong foundation for life.

A theme-based poster competition was conducted for students and 6 teams participated. These were judged by Dr. Nalini, Professor, OBG and Dr.Nagarajachari, Professor, Community Medicine. The winners were; I prize: Impana & Ikshuda; II prize: Athira& Aimee; III prize: Jagannath.

The programme concluded successfully with vote of thanks by Dr. Shashikala N, Asst. Professor and Community Medicine. This was followed by high tea.

Dean

Dr. Neelambikai Natarajan

Dr. Neelambikai Natarajan is a alumna of Thanjavur Medical College, where she obtained her medical degree. She further pursued her MD in Physiology from Madras Medical College and an MBA in Hospital Administration from Alagappa University.

Throughout her academic medical career, Dr. Natarajan has served in various capacities at several prominent institutions, including Madras Medical College, Madurai Medical College, Government Medical College Coimbatore, Government KAP Vishwanathan Medical College in Trichy, and Meenakshi Medical College in Kanchipuram. With over 20 years of administrative experience, she has held the position of Dean in multiple medical colleges for more than a decade. Her expertise in faculty training within medical education has earned her widespread recognition.

In addition to her administrative roles, Dr. Natarajan has served as an assessor on the Medical Council of India (MCI) panel for over 15 years. She was also an Ex-Senate member of the MGR University and Secretary of the Ethics Committee. Dr. Natarajan has completed an Advanced Course in Medical Education (ACME). Since 2019, she has been serving as the Dean at KVG Medical College and Hospital in Sullia.
