Psychiatry

Dr. Poonam

M.B.B.S., M.D. (Psychiatry)

General Information

Psychiatry, a critical branch of medicine, concentrates on diagnosing, managing, and preventing a wide array of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. Its importance cannot be overstated given the significant impact of these disorders on individuals’ lives, their loved ones, and society at large.

A psychiatrist, who is a highly trained medical doctor with either an M.D. or D.O. degree, is a specialist in mental health, including the treatment of substance use disorders. Their education and clinical training equip them with the understanding and expertise to assess and treat complex mental health issues, drawing from a comprehensive body of scientific knowledge that includes the biological, psychological, and social aspects of these disorders.

Their unique training allows psychiatrists to explore the physical and mental aspects of psychological issues, since mental health and physical health are often intertwined. For instance, psychiatrists can probe for any underlying physical conditions or medication side effects that could be contributing to mental health problems, ensuring a more comprehensive treatment approach.

People from all walks of life seek psychiatric help for a multitude of reasons. The triggering issues can be acute, occurring suddenly and intensely, causing significant distress and disruption in an individual’s life. Examples of these include panic attacks, where one might experience intense fear and physical symptoms such as a racing heart; frightening hallucinations involving perceived experiences that have no basis in reality; thoughts of suicide that are often linked to feelings of despair and worthlessness; or auditory hallucinations, colloquially referred to as “hearing voices,” a symptom often associated with certain mental health conditions like schizophrenia.

Alternatively, the problems may be chronic, persisting over a long-term period. These include persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, akin to those experienced in depression; unrelenting anxiousness which characterizes anxiety disorders; or issues functioning which can lead to a perception that everyday life is distorted or spiraling out of control. Such long-term conditions often require ongoing management strategies to alleviate symptoms and improve the quality of life.

Given the wide spectrum of mental health conditions and their varying degrees of severity, the role of psychiatry is pivotal in ensuring a healthier society. By providing a range of treatments including psychotherapy, medications, psychosocial interventions and other treatments, psychiatrists play an essential role in helping patients to recover and lead fulfilling lives. They work across various settings, including hospitals, private practice, and community mental health centers, often collaborating with a team of healthcare providers to offer the best care for their patients.
