Date: 01/06/2026
Time: 09:00 AM – 01:00 PM
Venue: KVC Hall–1 and Emergency Ward

The Department of General Surgery, K.V.G. Medical College & Hospital, conducted a workshop on “Basic Suturing Skills” for interns on 1st June 2026. The program was designed to provide participants with a strong foundation in basic surgical techniques through a combination of didactic teaching and hands-on training.

The workshop commenced with a lecture on Basic Suturing Techniques delivered by Dr. Ranjith K B, Professor, Department of General Surgery, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at KVC Hall–1. The session focused on the principles of wound closure, selection of suture materials, tissue handling, instrument handling, knot tying, and the indications for various suturing techniques.

Following the lecture, the practical session was conducted in the Emergency Ward from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Participants were provided with hands-on training using porcine skin and porcine intestine models, enabling them to gain realistic experience in tissue handling and surgical suturing.

The practical stations were supervised by Dr. Ranjith K B, Professor, Department of General Surgery; Dr. Saigeetha, Assistant Professor, Department of General Surgery; Dr. Prasad, Professor, Department of Orthopaedics; and Dr. Govind, Senior Resident, Department of Orthopaedics. The faculty members demonstrated the techniques and guided participants throughout the training session.

The workshop covered a range of essential surgical skills including simple interrupted suturing, continuous suturing, mattress suturing, subcuticular suturing, locking suturing, tendon suturing, bowel anastomosis, and tracheostomy. Particular emphasis was placed on proper needle handling, tissue approximation, knot security, and maintenance of aseptic surgical principles.

The interns actively participated in the workshop and benefited from the opportunity to practice the techniques under close supervision. The use of biological tissue models provided an effective simulation of operative conditions and enhanced the learning experience.

The workshop was attended by Dr. K. V. Chidananda, President AOLE and Medical Director, KVGMCH, whose presence encouraged both the faculty and participants. He appreciated the initiative taken by the Department of General Surgery in conducting a hands-on skill development program for interns and highlighted the importance of acquiring sound surgical techniques during the formative years of medical training.
