WORKSHOP ON VIRTUAL REALITY IN MEDICAL EDUCATION AND HEALTHCARE – 2026

Introduction

The Department of Medical Education, KVG Medical College & Hospital, Sullia, organized a workshop on “Virtual Reality in Medical Education and Healthcare” on 27 May 2026 for faculty members, postgraduate students, and Phase III Part II MBBS students.

The workshop was conducted by Dr. Adith Chinnaswamy, COO and Co-founder, Medisim VR, and Laparoscopic Surgeon, SRMC, Chennai. Mr. Keerthi Prasad served as the demonstrator and facilitated the hands-on VR experience for the participants.

Objectives
  1. To introduce participants to the applications of Virtual Reality (VR) in medical education and healthcare.
  2. To demonstrate the role of VR in simulation-based learning and skills training.
  3. To familiarize faculty and students with emerging educational technologies that support competency-based medical education.
  4. To provide experiential learning through hands-on interaction with VR modules.
Proceedings

Dr. Adith Chinnaswamy delivered an engaging session on the evolution and applications of VR technology in healthcare. He highlighted the advantages of immersive learning environments in improving clinical skills, procedural competency, and patient safety. Participants were introduced to various VR-based simulation modules and their use in medical training. The practical demonstration conducted by Mr. Keerthi Prasad enabled attendees to experience the technology firsthand and appreciate its educational value.

Outcomes
  1. Participants gained awareness of the potential of VR technology in medical education and clinical training.
  2. Faculty members explored opportunities for integrating simulation-based learning into teaching practices.
  3. Students and postgraduates experienced immersive learning methods that enhance understanding and skill acquisition.
  4. The workshop stimulated interest in adopting innovative technologies for healthcare education and training.
Conclusion

The workshop was well received by the participants and successfully achieved its intended objectives. The Department of Medical Education expresses its gratitude to the resource person and demonstrator for their valuable contribution to the program.

Dr. Neelambikai Natarajan

Dr. Neelambikai Natarajan is a alumna of Thanjavur Medical College, where she obtained her medical degree. She further pursued her MD in Physiology from Madras Medical College and an MBA in Hospital Administration from Alagappa University.

Throughout her academic medical career, Dr. Natarajan has served in various capacities at several prominent institutions, including Madras Medical College, Madurai Medical College, Government Medical College Coimbatore, Government KAP Vishwanathan Medical College in Trichy, and Meenakshi Medical College in Kanchipuram. With over 20 years of administrative experience, she has held the position of Dean in multiple medical colleges for more than a decade. Her expertise in faculty training within medical education has earned her widespread recognition.

In addition to her administrative roles, Dr. Natarajan has served as an assessor on the Medical Council of India (MCI) panel for over 15 years. She was also an Ex-Senate member of the MGR University and Secretary of the Ethics Committee. Dr. Natarajan has completed an Advanced Course in Medical Education (ACME). Since 2019, she has been serving as the Dean at KVG Medical College and Hospital in Sullia.
