The Department of Emergency Medicine, KVG Medical College and Hospital, Sullia, celebrated International Emergency Medicine Day on 27th May 2026 at Dr. KVC Hall with great enthusiasm and academic spirit. The program was organized to create awareness regarding the importance of Emergency Medicine and to recognize the tireless efforts of emergency healthcare professionals in saving lives round the clock.
The theme for International Emergency Medicine Day 2026 was “A Safe Space for Emergency Medicine Teams – Stop Violence Everywhere”, emphasizing the need for a secure and supportive environment for healthcare professionals working in emergency settings.
The program was presided over by Dr. K. V. Chidanand Sir, President, Academy of Liberal Education (R.), Sullia, and was graced by the presence of Dr. Nilambikai Natarajan Ma’am (Dean- KVGMCH), Dr. Subramanya Sir (Director of Trauma Services), Dr. Harold Maxim Lewis (Professor and Head, Department of Emergency Medicine) along with HODs of all Departments, faculty members, postgraduate students, undergraduate students, ETCT students, nursing staff, and hospital personnel.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation and successfully conveyed the importance of Emergency Medicine and the need for a safe working environment for healthcare professionals.
A large gathering of students, faculty members, and healthcare professionals attended the event, reflecting the growing importance of Emergency Medicine as a specialty.
This was followed by an informative session on the History of Emergency Medicine was delivered by Dr. Sri Ishwarya Lakshmi,(Post graduate – Department Of Emergency Medicine) who traced the evolution of emergency care services worldwide and discussed the development of Emergency Medicine as an independent specialty in India.
A comprehensive presentation on the Achievements of the Department of Emergency Medicine was delivered by Dr. Rachitha R, (Post graduate – Department Of Emergency Medicine).The presentation showcased the department’s growth since its inception, academic excellence, university ranks secured by postgraduate and ETCT students, research publications in reputed international journals, emergency care initiatives, and notable clinical success stories.
Special emphasis was laid on successful resuscitation cases, including critically ill patients who recovered completely and returned to their normal daily activities, demonstrating the expertise and dedication of the Emergency Medicine team.
As a gesture of gratitude and recognition, the Department of Emergency Medicine felicitated the institution’s dedicated ambulance driver – Mr. Abdul Haneef, for his exceptional commitment and selfless service. The department acknowledged his tireless efforts in providing round-the-clock emergency transportation services and his invaluable contribution to patient care.
The felicitation ceremony highlighted the importance of every member of the emergency care team in saving lives and ensuring seamless patient management.
A thought-provoking talk on the theme “Safe Space for Emergency Medicine Team – Stop Violence Everywhere” was delivered by Dr. Bopanna C.A. (Associate Professor- Department of Emergency Medicine) who emphasized the increasing incidents of violence against healthcare workers, the impact of such incidents on patient care, and the collective responsibility of healthcare institutions and society to ensure a safe working environment for emergency medicine professionals.
One of the highlights of the program was a thematic skit performed by the BSc. Emergency and Trauma Care students, portraying common challenges encountered in emergency healthcare settings. Through realistic scenarios, the students effectively demonstrated the importance of communication, teamwork, timely intervention, and mutual respect among healthcare workers and the public.


The skit also conveyed the message of preventing violence against healthcare workers and promoting a safer workplace environment for emergency care teams.
Dr. Harold Maxim Lewis Sir, Professor and Head of Department of Emergency Medicine, also addressed the gathering and spoke about the growth and achievements of the department, acknowledged the dedication of the faculty, residents, ETCT students, nursing staff, and support personnel, and emphasized the importance of teamwork in providing quality emergency care.
To encourage student participation and awareness about Emergency Medicine, various academic activities including a Poster Making Competition and an Emergency Medicine Quiz Competition were organized. Students actively participated and demonstrated their knowledge and creativity.
The winners were felicitated and awarded certificates and prizes during the program.

The program concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Dr. Karthik K S, (Assistant Professor- Department of Emergency Medicine) who expressed heartfelt gratitude to the management, administration, faculty members, students, organizing committee, participants, and all those who contributed to the successful conduct of the event.
The celebration served as a meaningful platform to recognize the contributions of Emergency Medicine professionals and reaffirm the commitment towards creating a safer and more supportive environment for healthcare workers.
